This is a topic that comes up all the time with our Sunshine Coast renovation clients. People who have never lived with a white or light coloured lounge before are understandably hesitant to take the plunge. I get it- kids, pets, red wine, footy food… it all sounds like a recipe for disaster.

But when the vision for a beautiful coastal living room calls for a white lounge, nothing else will do. And I’ve got the perfect story to prove that anyone (yes, anyone) can have a white lounge.

The Moffat Beach Near-Miss

For our recent beachfront apartment renovation at Moffat Beach, we replaced a black leather lounge suite with a round, custom-made sofa. As is often the case with bespoke pieces, the client was on the tall side, so finding the perfect lounge off the showroom floor was impossible. We designed one tailored exactly to his dimensions.

My client had her heart set on Bouclé fabric- the texture, the softness, the dreamy look.  She hesitated over choosing white (as everyone does!), especially knowing how many guests they host during the holidays. But I assured her that with the right preparation and the right fabric choice, a light-coloured sofa can absolutely be practical.

Once the lounge arrived (by crane, over the balcony- but that’s another story), it was divine. It was as soft and natural feeling as cotton, textural, fresh, and it transformed the apartment into a coastal Hamptons haven. A triumph!

…Two Weeks Later

I popped by a couple of weeks later to drop something off. My clients greeted me at the door with a ‘we-need-to-tell-you-something’  look.

“You won’t believe it… We had a visitor over Easter who spilled an entire glass of red wine on the brand-new, custom-made white lounge!”

My heart dropped.
“Where?” I asked, bracing myself.

I began to inspect and explore the beautiful lounge, lifting and turning each cushion and scanning every inch to find the spot.

And guess what?

There was no stain, no mark, no discolouration to be seen at all.. Thank goodness!

Such is the power of the correct fabric application.

The key takeaway here is by understanding different fabric types and how they behave. I am confident with the right fabric, anyone can enjoy peace of mind with a white lounge. Another tip is choosing one with removable slipcovers, which can be tossed in the wash for a quick refresh and clean. Or, white or light leathers will also give you a glamorous white lounge with the ability to wipe it down.

Ultimately, the dreamy, serene look of a white lounge is absolutely worth the little extra care it requires- and I’m confident you’ll love it just as much as we do 🙂
